INTERVIEW:
You seem very business savvy, has business been a passion of yours? Why is this and what’s your field?
Yes, I like business. I think in order to have the objective in terms of having an industry that we can control at the same time have a market place for our music, culture and business. and the business side such as how to do business, How to do business face to face, over the phone, How to do business in general.
Your clearly in a different place to other artists, Why is that?
I just think more globally than regionally and I would like to think that I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from my own life, I’ve also taken a lot of inspiration from my culture where I think other artists are not influenced by, u look at the music scene and what’s going on in London, I just feel like my approach to music is to make people feel something whether it’s to make you laugh or to make you feel the vibes differently. I think a lot of artists these days don’t approach music in a way to make people feel something. I think it’s kind of lost its meaning.
Who in the Cultural scene do you rate and listen to?
I don’t listen to anybody consistently, I wouldn’t say religiously but I would listen to certain things if someone like my brother for instance would say “have you heard Kano’s Fire In The Booth?” I’ll probably listen to it for a bit but I don’t listen to any ones music per say. I think I’ve listened to Skepta’s album Blacklisted. I haven’t really listened to any of the other guys out there.
What is missing from UK Music and culture and what can help its global impact?
That answer I gave about people thinking more globally as well on how to impact the world and how to impact London, so that London now becomes the vocal of representation. We are in London so we need to build that foundation in London and that will spread internationally. So yeah people having the vision to be able to think outside of their immediate scenery. We also defo need more entrepreneurs as well and we are getting there, people are very much more entrepreneurial and wanting to build something grand.
You’re an entrepreneur and you seem very strong-willed in regards to business in general, did you pick this up from family or is it self-taught?
I think it comes from me when I was growing up, I always felt like I had all of the talents right to make music and all of that, but I felt like that wouldn’t mean nothing If I wasn’t strong on the entrepreneurial side, I always looked up to the entrepreneurs that did music, entrepreneurial like Puff Daddy I looked up to him as a kid and people alike. There’s many Puff Daddy’s but as a kid I always looked up to somebody that owns a company, I used to think “how did they do that” “How does it become a global company” “ How do you get offices internationally” “How do you start paying people internationally” So I was always inspired by that. Being African and Nigerian when I go to Nigeria that whole culture is very entrepreneurial also, so from the break of dawn as soon as sunrises people are on their entrepreneurial grind whether it’s selling indomie, Gala or weather its selling Gala there always doing business moves. You could be driving in a car and someone’s trying to sell you something on the road, David Beckham calendars or pure water lol, and this starts from the kids upwards, they would be like 6years old already selling Gala or something on behalf of themselves if their solo or their family so overall this is how I have developed my knowledge and grafting spirit.
Top things you think make a great artist?
Top things that makes a great artist I think is having your own sense of style, I don’t mean style as in apparel clothing I mean style as in how you deliver your cadences and how you deliver your words, i think that has to be an important aspect, like what are you saying really? Not what are you saying in terms of what can I hear, but what are you saying in terms of what are you telling me, what are you teaching me, what are you showing me, I want to be entertained as well so I always like people that can entertain me and teach me something. People have to listen to your stuff and think YESS there’s a couple gems in there that I can take, I think your content, your style and your delivery is so important.
Your Rap Style, how would you describe it?
Very content driven so I do like to throw things in there that you might have to think about or somebody might have to explain. I like to make you think, I also like to be very braggadocios, I think naturally rap music is. That’s a good thing, I don’t always want to be brought down by music, I want to be uplifted. I want to feel confident about my music. I would also describe my music as very honest, genuine, authentic, braggadocios and content driven.
You’re making luxury Street Wear, What can we expect from Young Pharaoh clothing?
That’s a nice one, because I’ve got so many ideas but I don’t want to give it out to the world just yet, but what I will say is that the apparel and the lifestyle aspect is what I’m looking to take control of. I want to put out luxury items and make stuff that is universal so somebody that it’s not designed for will like it and somebody who it is designed for will like it also, so I’m not limiting myself or the people I can reach out to. This could be head wear, leg wear, chest wear.
What can we look out for from Dott Dee music?
The Upper Uchelon project mixtape, it’s got to be either a mixtape or an album or something so I’m going to call it The Upper Uchelon and I’m looking to work on that from now and hopefully it will be ready by the summer but definitely this year, and leading out towards the end of the year I’ll be putting out more music, Ill also be putting out visuals so there will be a lot to look out for from Dott Dee and the whole Young Pharaoh movement really.
